guilty gear

Characters of Guilty Gear:

Baiken Seishino is a fictional character from the Guilty Gear fighting game series. She is one of the only few characters who are Japanese (others being May and Anji Mito). During the Crusades, the nation of Japan was destroyed by the Gears. Following this, those of Japanese descent who still lived were declared cultural treasures and placed in special colonies. However, the Gears attacked even these colonies. During one attack, the young Baiken, after watching the death of her parents and losing her right arm and left eye, saw standing among the Gears their creator: "That Man." From that point, she swore revenge, training herself in the use of the katana and dedicated herself to hunting "That Man" down. Baiken was a hidden character in Guilty Gear but became a normal character in the later installments. Armed with a Katana, she also has many hidden surprise weapons within the sleeve of her severed arm: a Japanese mace, a fireworks cannon, a bladed fan, a chain rope, a hook, a claw, and a spear.

Story

Background

When Baiken was young, the Gears attacked the Japanese Institute she was living in at the time. During that attack she lost her parents, her right arm and left eye. Amidst the flames she could see a man (the creator of the Gears) and swore revenge on him and presumably the Gears as well, for what they had done.

Guilty Gear

Baiken was a hidden boss and secret character in this game, and thus was not a major part of the story. Presumably, she entered the tournament seeking revenge on the Gears, specifically Justice.

Guilty Gear X

Baiken is still seeking her revenge, hunting down "monsters," including Gears such as Sol Badguy and others she considers to be demons, including Potemkin and Faust. Her first ending has her nearly killing Testament and Dizzy, but then letting them go; her stated reason being that she can't find That Man. Her other ending has her accompanying Johnny for a drink.

Guilty Gear XX

Baiken continues her search for That Man. She eventually runs into Anji Mito, who is also seeking That Man, but Anji does not wish to kill him; instead he wants to ask him questions concerning Gears. Therefore, in order to save the keeper of such knowledge, Anji attempts to halt Baiken. In one of her endings, she meets That Man, but is unable to harm him. In another, the Post-War Administration Bureau sends a brainwashed May and a Robo-Ky after her, and she has a fairly easy time dispatching them. In her third ending, Anji stalls her, but she spares his life on the condition that he shares the information he managed to gather from That Man.

In this game, Baiken continues her search for revenge against That Man. Ultimately, she fails on finding him, but Anji insists on becoming her new accomplice. In her first ending she is shown with anji at her side vowing to protect her and at the same time quitting being a follower of 'That Man'. Stating that he (anji) "doesn’t want her to die." and bringing Baiken to the cold realization that 'That Man' is beyond both of them. They now again travel together with baiken seemly giving up on her vengeance. While her second ending (After killing I-no) protrays Baiken on the run still fueled by vengance. It is shown with Ky-Kiske attempting to apprehend her for her crimes as "Baiken the killer". It is most likely the first is the more canonical ending.

Trivia

  • Baiken is likely named, using different kanji, after Baiken Shishido, an Edo period samurai.
  • Baiken's special move "Tatami Gaeshi" is a reference to trap-doors in straw panel flooring (tatami) which are a cliché in Japanese period dramas.
  • Baiken is one of and perhaps one of the only Guilty Gear characters that has been able to actually murder and/or fatally wound I-no, though that scene is not considered to be canon.

Anji Mito is one of the few Japanese survivors (the others being Baiken and May). He is after That Man, who had devastated the country. Anji recovered the Zessen artifact, a powerful weapon in form of a pair of large fans. He's constantly seen around the Japanese ruins. His fighting style involves Japanese dancing steps, as he tries to keep alive the traditions of his native country.

    Personality:

Anji is ceremonial, optimistic, and upbeat. He never regrets losing a fight, instead he tries to negotiate with his opponents. He seems to be very intelligent, too. One of his traits is constantly stating to be proud of his weapon, and he tends to compare weapons with his opponents.
When he met Bridget in Bridget's Story Mode - Path 2 (Guilty Gear XX), Anji was angry that his identity was revealed to Bridget through the wanted list Bridget had. The British boy called him, "A wicked villain who fans his victims to death... and steals their valuables under the auspices of artistic dance", making Anji furious.

    STORY BACKGROUND

Anji seems like a rather average guy on the surface but underneath that, the game likes to hint at his very mysterious history, leaving the gamers and other characters curious. He escaped from his Japanese colony due to the government's orders that Japanese survivors should be kept safely in the colony's camp. The reason for putting them there is because Japanese people are regarded as endangered, since Japan was the first country hit by the Gears. As such, most Japanese people were killed and what few remain are considered 'national treasures'.
Anji disliked this way of living as it was like being trapped in a cage. He wanted to go out into the world and explore so he ran away from the the colony he lived in. Apparently he also learned of That Man's connection with the Gears and decided to leave to go learn more about him. Rumors say that Anji stole his Zessen fans before escaping from the colony in order to go face-to-face with Gears and other fighters/enemies.
Since then, Anji has been on the run from security forces looking to send him back to one of the colonies.

    Guilty Gear X

Anji meets Baiken at this point and they argue whether That Man should be killed or not. Anji rejects Baiken's idea for killing That Man. He wants That Man to remain alive so that he can ask him a few questions. After meeting That Man, he met up with Baiken once again.

    Guilty Gear XX

He remains in search for more information about the Gears. Anji receives the invitation to join That Man and supposedly become a Gear in the Path 1 Ending. Path 2 has him destroying Robo-Ky and learning only that someone is after Japanese individuals. This leads him to realize Baiken is also a target and he charges off to protect her from being captured. In the Path 3 Ending, he also learns of the capture attempts of Japanese people and he manages to meet up with Ky Kiske to learn that the Postwar Administration Bureau is behind all of it as well.

Anji Mito is now working for That Man and is given the mission of finding and bringing back I-No. In his first ending he tricks I-No into entering a trap and That Man punishes her by freezing her in a temporal stasis, although he promised to watch That Man's actions and see if there's something suspicious about him. In his second ending, Anji runs into Baiken and finds it more troubling to fight her so he decided to travel with her as her guardian again rather than continuing to work with That Man and risk on killing her.

    Trivia

    • Despite working on the main antagonist's side, Anji has yet to show a completely malevolent side like I-No, putting him into 'sympathetic antagonist' position due to his allegiance.
    • While not exactly full counterparts, BlazBlue's Litchi Faye-Ling can be said to be a mirror-counterpart of Anji, as they both sports glasses and fanservice-themed outfit on their upper bodies (Anji walks around shirtless while Litchi shows off some of her breasts) and at first very much neutral as well as connected with pink-haired, vengeful woman (Baiken for Anji, Kokonoe for Litchi). As the story advanced, they ended up joining the main antagonist group (That Man's group and NOL), but thus far, has yet to be corrupted morally and remained jovial and friendly to other people. The main difference of them was that Litchi was hard-pushed to join by her own disease and her concern over her dying friend Arakune and didn't show actual joy or contentness to serve NOL, while Anji was completely with his free will when joining That Man and seemed content enough in his service.

Justice is a major character in the Guilty Gear series and is one of it's main antagonists. Justice is a female Gear, the first "complete" Gear that was created by That Man. She was the instigator of the Crusades; a hundred year war against humans and Gears that is the foundation for the majority of the Guilty Gear story line. Justice was eventually defeated and destroyed by Sol Badguy (her former lover at a time used called "Frederick").

     STORY BACKGROUND

It is revealed later in the story that Justice was originally a human woman named Aria, Fredrick's(Now Sol Badguy) former lover. It is not known whether or not she volunteered to become a Gear or was forced by That Man. Regardless, as a result she lost all her memories of Fredrick and her former life, taking on the name of Justice. After her creation, she quickly began to realize that humans were inferior to Gears and began to resent how humans were the dominate species of Earth. Given the power to control other Gears, she waged war against the Human Race, almost resulting in the genocide of all the Japanese people and their culture. She was eventually defeated and sealed in an interdimentional prison by the Sacred Order Of Holy Knights. She was freed by Testament in Guilty Gear, only to be defeated again and destroyed.

    Guilty Gear

Story Mode states she's resurrected (or "unsealed") by Testament and sails off to destroy all the humans. She's defeated by Sol Badguy and finally hides to wait for humans to destroy themselves. However, this story can hardly be considered canon. When Sol finally destroys Justice she seems to regain her memories and her dying words are she wishes that "The three of them could talk one last time", referring to That Man as the third person. It is not known whether or not Sol actually knew that Justice was once his love Aria, but after defeating her and the truth is revealed, he vows revenge on That Man for everything he's done.

    Guilty Gear XX

Justice's Story mode here is the story of how she fought the members of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, including the former knight Sol Badguy. This story is narrated by That Man, recounting these events that have already taken place in history. Justice initially battles and defeats Kliff Undersn, Ky Kiske and even Sol Badguy. After his defeat, it is revealed that Sol is actually a Gear and Justice decides to try and take over his mind using her ability to control all other Gears, but she fails due to Sol being created before her(this mind control ability only worked on Gears that were created AFTER Justice). Using Justice's bewilderment to their advantage, Ky and the rest of the Order "sealed" Justice away, ending the 100 year war against the Gears.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core PLUS

Justice's Story Mode here is a retelling of her resurrection by Testament in the original Guilty Gear, her last confrontation with Ky Kiske and Kliff, finally meeting her end at the hands of Sol Badguy. In Story Mode for all other characters, Justice appears as a regular opponent, but these are only copies created by Crow and used as guardians.

    Trivia

    • Due to mistranslations in the first Guilty Gear game, and the blue ischium between the character sprite's legs (see below), it was previously believed that Justice was male. This theory is proven false in GGXX^Core. You know how people are with Fins and such.
    • It is stated and confirmed in the Drama CD Side Black that she is Dizzy's biological mother.
